Equipment costs $50,000 with a $5,000 salvage value and a 5-year life. What's year 1 depreciation using double-declining balance?

First, what's the straight-line rate for a 5-year life?

1 divided by 5, so 20%.

Double-declining doubles it. Now, what base do you apply that rate to in year 1: cost, or cost minus salvage?

Cost minus salvage, so 45,000 × 40% = 18,000.

That's the common trap. Declining-balance methods ignore salvage in the calculation and just stop at it. Try again with the full cost.

50,000 × 40% = 20,000 in year 1. Then salvage only caps how low book value can go.

Double-declining balance applies twice the straight-line rate to book value, ignoring salvage until the floor.
