You: How do I say “She went to the movies” in French?
Kuest: This is the passé composé, which needs a helper verb plus a past participle. Does aller take avoir or être?
You: Être, because it's a movement verb. So “Elle est allé au cinéma.”
Kuest: Right helper verb. One more rule: with être, the past participle agrees with the subject. The subject is elle, so what changes?
You: It gets an extra e: “Elle est allée au cinéma.”
Kuest: Parfait. Now try “They (all girls) went to the movies.”
You: Feminine and plural, so e and s: “Elles sont allées au cinéma.”

Verbs like aller take être in the passé composé, and the participle agrees with the subject: elle est allée.
