You: I have String a = new String("hi"); String b = new String("hi"); Why is a == b false?
Kuest: Let's think about what a and b actually hold. When you write new String("hi") twice, how many String objects exist?
You: Two, one for each new. They just have the same letters.
Kuest: Right. For objects, a variable holds a reference to where the object lives. So what is == comparing?
You: Whether a and b point to the same object, and they don't, so it's false.
Kuest: Exactly. What would you use if you want to know whether they contain the same text?
You: a.equals(b), which compares the characters, so it returns true.

For objects, == compares references and .equals() compares contents, so compare Strings with .equals().
