80%. But can't I just add 20% back? 40 × 1.2 = 48.

Let's test that. Take 20% off $48: that's 48 − 9.60 = $38.40, not $40. The $40 is 80% of the original. How would you write that as an equation?

0.8p = 40, so p = 40 ÷ 0.8 = 50. The original price was $50.

Right, $50. And 20% off $50 is $40, so it checks out.

To undo a percent discount, divide by what's left (0.8), don't add the percent back.
