A strong thesis is something a reader could argue with. Could anyone disagree that Fitzgerald uses symbolism?

Not really. I'll make it more specific: “In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses symbols like the green light.”

More specific is good, but it's still a fact, not a claim. What does the green light show us about Gatsby?

That he's chasing a dream he can't reach. “Fitzgerald uses the green light to show that Gatsby's dream depends on a past he can never get back.”

Now that's arguable, and it tells your reader what each paragraph will prove. Next step: find two passages that support it.

A thesis names what a detail means, not just that it exists, so a reader could reasonably disagree.
