Find the derivative of f(x) = x³ · sin(x).

This is two functions multiplied together. Which rule handles a product, and what are the two pieces?

The pieces are x³ and sin(x). Their derivatives are 3x² and cos(x), so f′(x) = 3x² cos(x).

Both derivatives are right. The product rule doesn't multiply them though. It's f′g + fg′: derivative of the first times the second, plus the first times derivative of the second. Want to build it?

3x² · sin(x) + x³ · cos(x). So f′(x) = 3x² sin(x) + x³ cos(x).

That's it. Multiplying the two derivatives is a very common slip, so it's worth double-checking on every product.

The derivative of a product is f′g + fg′, not the product of the derivatives.
